Should the head of the UOC-MP Onufriy prepare for sanctions? A lawyer calculated the next step of the authorities
According to glavcom.ua: According to the lawyer, when a person loses their citizenship, they lose all associated rights. If Metropolitan Onufriy does not have Russian citizenship, he may become stateless, which is a unique situation in the legal context of Ukraine, as the Constitution does not provide for the deprivation of citizenship.
President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate, Metropolitan Onufriy, may become a target for sanctions due to the loss of Ukrainian citizenship. Lawyer Danila Tryasov explained that deprivation of citizenship often precedes the imposition of sanctions.
Sanctions provided for by legislation can be applied against foreign states and individuals who engage in terrorist activities. We remind that several clerics of the UOC-MP, including Metropolitan Pavel and Metropolitan Meletiy, were previously subjected to this decision to resolve the conflict situation.
The loss of citizenship may serve as a basis for the imposition of sanctions by the Ukrainian authorities; however, such a situation will once again demonstrate the complexity of legal practice in Ukraine and may have significant consequences in international relations.
