The AI-generated image was posted on her official X account, accompanied by a red "FALSA" (Fake) label. She took this step to expose political opponents who allegedly use such technology to undermine her credibility.

This incident follows Meloni’s earlier €100,000 lawsuit against creators of pornographic deepfakes that she claims have damaged her reputation. She noted that multiple fake images of her, all produced using artificial intelligence, are circulating online.

“I must admit that whoever made them-at least in this case-also significantly improved my appearance. But the fact remains,” Meloni commented.

New Legislation and Broader Implications

The revelation comes as Italy enacts Law No. 132/2025, which imposes prison sentences of up to five years for harmful uses of artificial intelligence. Italy is the first European Union country to pass such legislation, aiming to regulate and counter the threats posed by deepfakes.

Meloni warned that

“deepfakes are a dangerous tool because they can deceive, manipulate, and harm anyone.”

She also urged the public to verify information: “Check before you believe, and think before you share.”
