Bulgarian President Steps Down

According to Главком: Bulgarian President Rumen Radev has declared his intention to resign, stating he will formally submit his resignation to the Constitutional Court. This move comes during a period of political instability in the country and ahead of planned early parliamentary elections. Radev, who has served as president for nine years, shared his thoughts in a final address to the nation. His resignation marks a significant moment in Bulgaria's recent political history, which has been characterized by frequent government turnovers.

The president's decision follows a series of widespread protests that swept Bulgaria in 2020 and again in 2025. In December of last year, the Bulgarian government resigned after mass demonstrations expressing public outrage. Further mass protests occurred on December 1, 2023, this time organized by the opposition coalition 'We Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria' against the draft 2026 budget. In response to the protesters' actions, the government announced the withdrawal of the contentious budget proposal.

Statement from Rumen Radev

In his statement, Radev remarked:

“Nine years ago, you entrusted me with the work of serving as President of Bulgaria.”

He also emphasized that

“today I am addressing you for the last time as President of Bulgaria”

and acknowledged his mistakes, stating: “The first thing I would like to ask for is forgiveness. Thank you for your patience.” He named Iliana Yotova as a worthy head of state, a comment that may signal potential changes in the country's leadership.

Radev's resignation underscores the deep political and social divisions within Bulgaria, where public discontent has fueled repeated mass demonstrations. The transition to new elections could present an opportunity to form a more stable government, yet significant challenges remain as society demands tangible reforms and improvements in quality of life. Public attention is now focused on who will assume the presidency and what steps a new administration will take to address the nation's persistent issues.
