According to ХВИЛЯ: In an interview with The Guardian, Czech President Petr Pavel called on NATO to adopt a more assertive stance in response to Russian provocations. Among the potential measures he mentioned are shooting down aircraft, cutting off internet access, and tightening sanctions. Pavel, a retired general and former chairman of NATO's Military Committee, emphasized that the situation demands a proportional reaction to Moscow's aggressive actions, particularly regarding airspace violations.

Pavel noted that Russian military forces have recently escalated their provocative behavior.

“When I asked them why they engage in these air provocations-dangerous close encounters or flyovers of ships in the Black or Baltic Sea-they replied: because we can. That is exactly the behavior we have allowed them to exhibit,”

he stated. In his view, if NATO airspace violations persist, the Alliance will have to decide on shooting down either an unmanned or manned aircraft.

“they mostly understand the language of force, ideally backed by action.”

He also expressed concern over the Alliance's tendency to wait for initiatives from Washington, which could project an image of weakness or disarray. “Instead, we mostly wait for what comes from Washington. If we don't propose our own solutions, we will appear weak or disoriented,” Pavel stressed.

Among possible NATO steps, he listed:

• disabling internet and satellite systems
• cutting Russian banks off from the global financial system

“Whatever we allow, they will keep pushing further and further,” the Czech president added.
