Dynamo President Surkis Reaches Out to Rebrov After His Resignation: Key Details
Serhiy Rebrov Steps Down, and Ihor Surkis Responds
According to Главком: Ihor Surkis, the president of FC Dynamo Kyiv, has addressed Serhiy Rebrov following the latter's departure as head coach of the Ukrainian national team. Rebrov left his role by mutual agreement with the leadership of the Ukrainian Association of Football (UAF). He had held the position for nearly three years, starting in June 2023. The resignation was triggered by Ukraine's 1-3 loss to Sweden in the semifinal playoff of the qualifiers, which dashed the team's hopes of advancing to the World Cup set to take place in North America.
In his message, Surkis offered Rebrov words of encouragement during this difficult period.
“Dear Serhiy Stanislavovych! Allow me to express my respect and support at this challenging time. You did not shy away from the challenge and took on the immense responsibility of leading the Ukrainian national team during a terrible war,”
the Dynamo president stated. Surkis also thanked Rebrov for his contributions to Ukrainian football and wished him well in the next stages of his career.
Rebrov's Gratitude and UAF President's Remarks
Rebrov, in turn, expressed his appreciation to the entire team and fans for their backing.
“I am grateful to the whole team and the supporters for the journey we have shared. It was a tough path with victories and defeats, but Ukrainians always stood by the national team,”
he said. He also thanked the UAF for its support and collaboration during his tenure as coach.
UAF President Andriy Shevchenko commented on Rebrov's resignation, noting, “We thank Serhiy Stanislavovych for his work and his role in developing young players. Today, we need to move forward and make new decisions that will lay the foundation for the national team's future.”
Despite stepping down as head coach, Serhiy Rebrov remains within the UAF as a vice president and a member of the executive committee. Having previously played for Dynamo and served as the club's head coach, his deep involvement in Ukrainian football continues.
Rebrov's resignation unfolded against the backdrop of challenges facing Ukrainian football, particularly due to the country's unstable situation. His leadership of the national team involved not only sporting hurdles but also social and political circumstances that impacted the squad. The UAF's upcoming decisions regarding a new coach and development strategy could significantly shape the future of Ukrainian football.
In light of Rebrov's resignation, it's essential to understand the broader implications for the national team and its future direction.
