Finnish President Alexander Stubb’s Call to Action

According to ХВИЛЯ: Finnish President Alexander Stubb has urged European nations to independently initiate contact with the Kremlin, citing a growing misalignment between U.S. policies and European interests. In an interview published by Italy’s Corriere della Sera, Stubb outlined three possible outcomes for the war in Ukraine:

  • the conflict continues;
  • a ceasefire is reached, followed by a peace agreement;
  • one side collapses, likely Russia.

He also noted that a peace settlement is off the table at least until the end of this year.

Stubb stressed the need for coordination among the E5 nations-Germany, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Poland-alongside Nordic and Baltic countries bordering Russia. 'The key is that everything is coordinated among us, especially among the E5 countries,' the Finnish president stated.

He does not foresee a large-scale U.S. withdrawal from Europe, emphasizing that 'the United States will not leave Europe.' Currently, 37,000 American troops are stationed in Germany, with a potential reduction of 5,000.

Finland’s Defense Strategy and Nuclear Concerns

Alexander Stubb also highlighted that Finland has been a NATO member for three years and four months, yet its defense doctrine has always been built to allow the country to defend itself against Russia independently. He reported that Russia and the U.S. each possess 1,500 nuclear warheads, while China has 600-a number projected to reach 1,000 by 2030.

Stubb emphasized that for the first time in half a century, no nuclear arms limitation treaty exists, a situation he finds alarming.

The Finnish president also expressed concern over the U.S. striking Iran without consulting Europe, noting that 'the European reaction to Iran is driven by the fact that Trump did not consult us before launching the attack.'

'Right now, it’s difficult because U.S. foreign policy is, on one hand, ideological-MAGA-and on the other, America First,' - Alexander Stubb

Stubb’s call for European coordination and independent diplomacy reflects growing anxiety among European nations about U.S. influence on regional security. As the global order becomes increasingly unpredictable, it is crucial for European countries to explore ways to engage with Russia and other actors that could affect stability in the region. This could be an important step toward reducing tensions and improving Europe’s security landscape.

As Europe navigates its complex relationship with Russia, it's important to consider the potential for renewed diplomatic engagement. Recent statements from Alexander Stubb underline the necessity of a coordinated approach among European nations.
