Early Parliamentary Elections Set for Serbia

According to Главком: Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has announced plans to hold early parliamentary elections, expected to take place between late September and mid-November. If conducted, this would mark the fifth national vote in Serbia within the past decade, and the fourth snap election during that period.

Vučić stated: 'The vote will occur between September and November, specifically from the end of September to the middle of November.'

Political Climate in the Country

The Serbian Parliament, known as the National Assembly, consists of 250 seats. Since 2012, the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) has dominated electoral contests. However, anti-government demonstrations-which began in November of last year-continue across the country. Protesters are voicing dissatisfaction with President Vučić's actions, and clashes with his supporters have become a recurring feature of these rallies.

Recent months have seen a surge in protests following the tragic collapse of a canopy at the Novi Sad railway station, which killed 16 people. That disaster has sparked accusations of corruption and misuse of funds. Vučić, who has led the country since 2017, has declared that he does not intend to run for reelection.
