According to Radiotrek — Світ: On August 12, 2026, a material revealing the personal experiments of Professor Morten Shaiybye-Knudsen from Copenhagen University, a researcher of aging who studies ways to slow down biological age, was published on Radio Trek. In his work, Shaiybye-Knudsen shared seven methods he uses to combat aging. His motivation stems from personal losses: his parents, grandfather, and grandmother died from Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.
Morten Shaiybye-Knudsen, who is 46 years old, is a professor and group leader at the Center for Healthy Aging. He has over 100 scientific papers and 6500 citations. Among the proposed methods for reducing biological age, the professor highlights:
- Regular intake of metformin (a diabetes medication).
- Regular intake of nicotinamide riboside (a specific form of vitamin B3).
- COFFEE. 5-6 cups of coffee a day.
- Cream for coffee.
- Dark chocolate and avoiding sugar.
- Intermittent fasting 16:8.
- Prioritizing active communication and avoiding isolation.
Metformin, according to research, is an inexpensive drug that the professor takes to lower glucose levels. A low sugar level triggers autophagy, a process that promotes cell cleansing. A study in 2024 on monkeys showed that metformin can rejuvenate the structure and cognitive functions of primate brains by 6 years.
Nicotinamide riboside increases NAD levels in the body and reduces inflammatory processes, especially in smokers with chronic lung disease. The best effect from coffee is observed when consuming 4-5 cups a day, while a larger quantity may worsen sleep. Cream for coffee increases the absorption of polyphenols found in coffee compared to skim milk. Dark chocolate, which contains beneficial flavonoids, is also on the list of recommended products, while sugar should be avoided as it may stimulate excessive cell growth and block anti-aging processes.
Intermittent fasting 16:8 involves eating only from 12:00 to 20:00. In clinical trials, elderly participants were able to reduce their biological age by 10-15 years within 12 weeks. They also lost between 12% and 20% of body fat. However, fasting is not recommended for elderly people with sarcopenia or osteoporosis without strength training exercises.
An active social life, according to the professor, reduces inflammation levels and regulates blood pressure better than diabetes management. Morten Shaiybye-Knudsen adjusts his fasting schedule to have dinner with his family, which is an important aspect of his daily life.
The research of Professor Shaiybye-Knudsen emphasizes the importance of developing new strategies in the fight against aging, focusing on both physical and social aspects of health.
The use of accessible methods, such as metformin and intermittent fasting, can serve as a basis for further research in this field. The importance of an active social life also indicates that psychological well-being is an integral part of overall health, especially in old age.
