Volodymyr Opanasenko: A Donetsk Region State Emergency Service Rescuer

According to ДСНС: Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Volodymyr Opanasenko of the Donetsk region's State Emergency Service (SESU) has remained at his post in Kramatorsk. He continues to perform his duties during the war, saving lives and mitigating the aftermath of shelling, demonstrating consistent bravery and professionalism in extreme circumstances.

The Attack on Chasiv Yar

In July 2022, the town of Chasiv Yar came under attack, resulting in the deaths of 48 people, including one child. The subsequent rescue and recovery operation to clear the rubble lasted for five arduous days, with teams working under immensely difficult conditions to locate victims. The SESU is Ukraine's primary civil defense and disaster response agency, operating daily under fire. Volodymyr Opanasenko managed to save nine people from the debris, though he somberly notes,

"Unfortunately, many of those we pulled out showed no signs of life."

Reflecting on his career path, Volodymyr recalled,

"Later, I started participating in fire-applied sports, and with each passing year, I understood more and more that I wanted to dedicate my life to this very work."
