The Unarmed Heroes

According to ДСНС: Oleksandr Stoianov, a rescuer from the Odesa region, has served with Ukraine's State Emergency Service (DSNS) for three years. When the full-scale war began, he returned to Odesa, a city where he feels at home. He started his service in the city of Rozdilna and transferred to Odesa a year later. His job confronts him with constant danger, including a fire in a grain silo on the minus second level and a secondary explosion that occurred just two minutes after his team finished their work.

Oleksandr has lived in Odesa for over 15 years. He recalls feeling a deep anxiety on February 24th, around 4 a.m., when he heard the first explosions of the invasion. After two weeks in a safer location, he made the crucial decision to return to Odesa, viewing it as a vital duty.

"This is my city. My country. If I leave, I will never return as the same person," says Oleksandr Stoianov.

Dedication to the Calling

Oleksandr was inspired to become a rescuer by his twin brother, who has worked for many years in an emergency rescue unit. Serving together in the military prepared Oleksandr for the challenges he now faces. He emphasizes his motivation:

"I didn't just come to a job-I came to help and bring benefit to people and the state," states Oleksandr Stoianov.

For Oleksandr, the support of his team is essential in performing his duties. "We have a young crew, mutual support, and genuine male friendship. When you have a tight-knit team, it's easier to withstand any challenge," he explains. He also speaks to the terrifying nature of their work, noting, "Ballistics are frightening. They are swift." The DSNS, often working under fire, has become a critical pillar of civilian defense since Russia's invasion.

Oleksandr Stoianov exemplifies dedication and a readiness to help others in the most difficult times. He has a wife and a ten-year-old daughter, who are a central part of his life. His story is a powerful testament that heroism is not always armed; it is often found in determination, humanity, and a simple desire to help.

The account of Oleksandr Stoianov underscores the indispensable role of rescue services during war and emergencies. His professional commitment and the camaraderie of his colleagues demonstrate how collective effort can overcome the most severe challenges. Rescuers like Oleksandr play a key role in ensuring safety and stability for the country, especially in times of crisis.
