Ukraine's Squad Situation Before the Playoffs

According to Главком: Ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualification playoffs, Ukraine's head coach Serhiy Rebrov has outlined the team's personnel challenges. He discussed potential replacements in defense and attack, necessitated by player injuries. A major concern is the absence of striker Artem Dovbyk due to injury, which complicates the coaching staff's plans. The upcoming playoff represents a crucial hurdle for Ukraine's national team as they aim to reach their first World Cup since the conflict began.

Rebrov's attacking options now include Roman Yaremchuk of Lyon and Vladyslav Vanat of Girona. The coach acknowledged the striker position is problematic, requiring a direct replacement for Dovbyk.

"I am pleased that Krasnopir, Ponomarenko, and Budkivskyi are scoring. We are monitoring all forwards. In any case, there will probably be a new name on the list in March," Rebrov noted.

Upcoming Fixtures and Team Plans

Ukraine will face Sweden in the World Cup qualification playoff semi-final on March 26. The winner of that match will play for a spot at the 2026 World Cup against the victor of the Albania-Poland tie.

Furthermore, Ukraine will begin their 2026/27 Nations League campaign with an away match against Hungary on September 25. In that competition, they are drawn in League B, Group 2 alongside Hungary, Georgia, and Northern Ireland. The winner of Group B2 will earn promotion to Nations League Division A.

Rebrov also commented on potential defensive replacements, specifically noting the readiness of Oleksandr Tymchyk:

"Who will replace Konoplia? Tymchyk is ready now. I hope he will play in the Ukrainian Cup. We'll see. I cannot tell a coach who to play and who not to."

He emphasized that internal competition is a vital aspect and that players demonstrating good form deserve an opportunity.

Despite these selection issues, the Ukrainian national team is preparing for its critical matches. The coaching staff continues to search for optimal solutions for the squad. The importance of the upcoming fixtures, particularly against Sweden, underscores the need for cohesive play and rapid adaptation, which will determine the team's path on the international stage.
