Ukraine Braces for Record-Breaking Heat: Temperatures Could Reach 40°C

August 3 Forecast: Dry Skies in Most Areas, Afternoon Highs Up to 38°C

The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center says the day will be partly cloudy, with almost no rainfall. Short-lived showers and thunderstorms are only expected in the western and northern regions during the afternoon. Overnight temperatures will be between 15°C and 20°C; during the day, the mercury will climb to 30–34°C. In southern and southwestern areas, local highs could reach 35–38°C.

Winds will be light, from varying directions at 3–8 m/s. In the capital, Kyiv, overnight lows will be 18–20°C, and the afternoon maximum will reach 32–34°C. In Kyiv Oblast, temperatures will follow the same pattern: 15–20°C at night and 30–34°C during the day. Forecasters say that dry, hot conditions will dominate almost the entire country on Monday, but isolated thunderstorms may appear during the day and evening in western, northwestern, and Crimean regions.

Outlook for the Coming Days

The heat will intensify between August 4 and August 6. On Tuesday, August 4, the night will bring 17–22°C, and daytime temperatures will range from 32°C to 37°C, with southwestern regions seeing up to 38–40°C.

• Wednesday, August 5, is expected to be dry. Overnight lows will rise to 18–23°C, daytime highs to 33–38°C, and parts of western Ukraine could reach 39–40°C.
• Thursday, August 6, will bring possible brief thunderstorms at night in Polissia and during the day across other western regions, with a risk of squalls. Overnight readings will be 19–24°C, daytime highs 33–38°C, and up to 39–40°C in the south and west.

Meteorologist Ihor Kibalchych said that "the first ten days of August will bring record temperatures to Ukraine and become the hottest period of this summer."

He added that on certain days, thermometers in the shade may show 40°C, and significant relief is not expected until the weekend. These high temperatures are likely to affect daily life, including agriculture and the energy sector, as hotter conditions mean more electricity use for cooling and added stress for plants and animals. Forecasters advise people to stay cautious and follow safety measures during extreme heat, especially when temperatures exceed 35°C. With daytime highs still climbing, the scorching weather will remain the story in the days ahead.
