Eli Lilly’s Retatrutide Shows Triple the Weight Loss Power of Ozempic, Achieving Up to 30% Reduction in Body Weight Over Two Years

Participants in the study lost as much as 30% of their body weight over a two-year period, alongside additional health benefits.

The extensive trial involved 2,339 individuals across 130 clinical sites in 11 countries. Volunteers began with an average weight of approximately 113 kilograms and a body mass index (BMI) of 40. Subjects were divided into four groups receiving different doses of retatrutide-4 mg, 9 mg, 12 mg-or a placebo. Retatrutide uniquely targets multiple receptors simultaneously, including GLP-1, GIP, and glucagon receptors, which contributes to its substantial impact on weight reduction.

Health Benefits and Side Effects

On average, patients shed 25% of their body weight after 80 weeks, reaching an average weight loss of 30% by the end of the second year. Retatrutide is a synthetic, long-acting peptide that remains active in the bloodstream for about six days and is administered via a weekly subcutaneous injection. Notably, the drug also reduced knee pain from osteoarthritis by 62% and decreased the frequency of sleep apnea episodes by more than half.

Additional findings revealed significant decreases in blood pressure, triglycerides, and LDL cholesterol levels. More than 90% of participants with prediabetes reversed their condition by the conclusion of the trial. However, retatrutide, like many medications, caused side effects in some patients, including nausea, digestive discomfort, and dizziness. These results were published in The New England Journal of Medicine.

Earlier this summer, a 79-year-old patient received the experimental drug under the auspices of the Trump administration, sparking notable discussion within medical circles.
