Ukraine by 2033: a shortage of 4.5 million workers due to a demographic crisis

Ukraine on the brink of demographic collapse
Прогнозоване скорочення робочої сили в Україні через десять років внаслідок демографічних змін.

According to data released by the source 'Glavkom', Ukraine is expected to face a shortage of 4.5 million workers over the next 10 years. The demographic strategy until 2040 aims to curb emigration and attract immigrants to work in the country.

Life expectancy and demographic situation

The average life expectancy of Ukrainian men has decreased from 65.2 years to 57.3 years, and for women – from 74.4 years to 70.9 years. A significant decline in birth rates in villages in the western part of the country, particularly in Rivne Oblast, has led to reduced funding for maternity hospitals and the closure of schools due to insufficient number of students.

The overall demographic picture

Since 2022, Ukraine's population has decreased from 42 million to less than 36 million, including territories under occupation. It is predicted that by 2051 this number will decrease to 25 million, which will place the country in a leading position in terms of mortality and birth rates, where three deaths occur for every one newborn. Experts do not expect a significant increase in birth rates after the war in Ukraine ends.

Ukraine is facing a serious problem with the workforce in the near future due to declining population and decreasing birth rates. The state will have to act actively to ensure the necessary personnel for the development of the economy and social sphere.
