Three Drones Target Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Plant in Russian Attack; Shmyhal Alerts G7 and IAEA to Nuclear Security Risks
Attack on Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant
According to ХВИЛЯ: Russian forces launched a large-scale assault involving three drones aimed directly at the Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plant’s substation. This information was shared by Denys Shmyhal, Ukraine’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, during a briefing with ambassadors from the G7 nations, the European Union, and the Northern Baltic Eight.
During these attacks, Russia deployed a significant arsenal including:
- 289 drones
- 17 ballistic missiles
- 59 cruise missiles
The primary targets of these strikes were power plants and transmission and distribution substations across Ukraine’s electrical grid.
Risks to Nuclear Safety
Shmyhal emphasized that such aggressive actions pose a serious threat not only to Ukraine but also to nuclear safety throughout Europe.
“This represents a grave escalation, which we have reported to the IAEA,”
he stated. The International Atomic Energy Agency has been notified and will oversee the ongoing assessment and management of these nuclear security concerns.
He also expressed hope for a strong response from international partners to counter the intensifying Russian attacks on Ukraine’s critical nuclear infrastructure.
This incident is part of a broader Russian strategy aimed at destabilizing Ukraine’s energy system and undermining its infrastructure. Given the critical importance of nuclear safety amid the ongoing conflict, the international community’s reaction could be pivotal in preventing further escalation and maintaining regional stability. Close collaboration between Ukraine and global organizations like the IAEA remains essential to monitor the situation and uphold nuclear security standards.
