Attacks on Naftogaz Infrastructure

According to Главком: Over the past 24 hours, Russia has launched a series of strikes against Naftogaz facilities, specifically targeting oil and gas infrastructure in the Kharkiv and Sumy regions. In one instance in the Sumy area, the enemy carried out a second attack just hours after the first. The assaults are also ongoing in Poltava and Dnipropetrovsk regions, signaling an escalation in the scope of aggression.

On the night of May 20, Russian forces used missiles to hit Naftogaz oil and gas infrastructure in the Chernihiv region. The previous night, on May 19, the Russian army attacked Naftogaz Group facilities, striking company assets in the Dnipropetrovsk region with three ballistic missiles. On the night of May 18, Russian drones targeted critical Naftogaz infrastructure in Dnipropetrovsk, including a Ukrnafta gas station complex.

Two female employees were injured in these attacks and require medical treatment. The gas station building and its equipment were completely destroyed. Naftogaz's press service reported:

“We have sustained significant damage. Fires broke out.”

The situation in the affected regions remains dire, underscoring the severe consequences of these strikes.

Impact on Energy Security

These attacks on Naftogaz infrastructure are part of a broader strategy by the Russian Federation aimed at destabilizing Ukraine’s energy sector. The destruction of key facilities could severely affect the country’s energy security, as well as the economic stability of the impacted regions.

Looking ahead, this could lead to:

  • Increased reliance on alternative energy sources for Ukraine;
  • Higher costs for rebuilding destroyed infrastructure.

The ongoing assaults on Naftogaz facilities highlight a troubling pattern of aggression, as evidenced by similar strikes reported in the Kharkiv and Zhytomyr regions. These coordinated attacks not only threaten Ukraine’s energy infrastructure but also exacerbate the already critical situation.
