Ukraine Endures Major Assault: 420 Drones and 39 Missiles Strike Eight Regions
Massive Overnight Assault
According to Зеленський: Ukraine was subjected to a large-scale overnight assault involving 420 drones and 39 missiles of various types. The majority of the drones used in the attack were identified as 'Shahed' models, while 11 of the missiles were ballistic. This coordinated strike caused significant destruction across eight Ukrainian regions, damaging both private residences and multi-story buildings. This represents one of the largest combined drone and missile barrages in recent months.
The attack resulted in dozens of injuries, including children. Critical energy infrastructure was also targeted, with gas facilities hit in the Poltava region and electrical substations struck in the Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions. Emergency services were deployed to incident sites in the Chernihiv, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, Kirovohrad, Vinnytsia, and Kyiv regions, as well as in the capital city.
Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepted most of the incoming missiles. A portion of the air defense missiles used were supplied by Ukraine's international partners, following agreements made during the latest 'Ramstein' format meeting of defense officials.
Impact on Civilians
Despite the efforts of air defense systems, some strikes penetrated, leading to substantial damage. The nighttime attack underscores the ongoing intensity of the conflict and its severe impact on Ukraine's civilian population. The war continues to inflict a heavy humanitarian toll far from the front lines.
This massive assault is a stark reminder of the conflict's escalation and the resulting humanitarian crisis. Given the scale of such attacks, continued international support for Ukraine's defense capabilities remains crucial. Meanwhile, civilian casualties and the destruction of critical infrastructure pose a direct threat to the safety and well-being of millions across the country.
