Russia Launches Missile and Drone Strikes on Ukraine: Eight Dead, Unexploded Rocket Found in Kyiv
Missile and Drone Assault Hits Ukraine Overnight
According to ХВИЛЯ: In the early hours of October 7, Russia carried out a coordinated missile and drone attack targeting multiple regions of Ukraine, including Kyiv and Chernihiv. The strikes resulted in at least eight fatalities and over 20 injuries, with some victims being children. The bombardment caused widespread damage to both residential and commercial buildings, triggering fires and explosions. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the assault involved a variety of weapons, such as the anti-ship 'Tsirkon' and 'Oniks' missiles, ballistic 'Iskander-M' missiles, S-400 systems, and Kh-101 cruise missiles.
Impact and Damage in Affected Areas
In the city of Pryluky, Chernihiv region, a multi-story residential building was struck, leaving four people dead and 20 wounded, including three children. Kyiv experienced missile impacts across the Obolonsky, Podilskyi, and Shevchenkivskyi districts. While strikes in Obolonsky and Shevchenkivskyi hit non-residential structures, in Podilskyi, warehouse facilities were hit, sparking a fire in an office-storage complex.
Firefighters extinguished a 200-square-meter blaze in a garage cooperative located in Kyiv's Darnytskyi district, where the bodies of two security guards, both over 60 years old, were recovered. A woman named Antonina reported that her husband Anatoliy, who worked as a guard at the cooperative, has been unreachable since the explosion. Remarkably, rescuers pulled a small child alive from the rubble in Pryluky.
Authorities discovered an unexploded ballistic missile in Kyiv's Darnytskyi district. Police and the State Emergency Service are currently removing the warhead to safely dispose of it at a designated range. Access to the area around the missile is restricted. Additionally, a central warehouse of the ATL auto parts chain was completely destroyed, disrupting logistics and limiting product availability in the coming days. Despite the damage, ATL's stores and service centers remain operational with redistributed stock.
The attacks have also caused significant transportation disruptions in Kyiv, especially near the Northern Bridge. Bus routes 22 and 91 are detouring via the Darnytskyi Bridge due to altered traffic patterns. The city’s funicular service has been halted owing to a power outage. By 9:00 AM, Ukrainian air defenses reported neutralizing or suppressing 161 enemy targets, including 5 ballistic missiles, 39 cruise missiles, and 117 drones-of which 38 were jet-powered.
“During the night, there were confirmed strikes in Obolonsky, Podilskyi, and Shevchenkivskyi districts,” stated Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
“They had just been served tea,” commented Serhiy Klochko regarding the timing of the attacks.
Overall, impacts were recorded at 18 locations, with debris falling at five additional sites. Ukrainian forces detected up to ten hostile drones operating in the airspace during the assault.
This latest offensive underscores Russia’s ongoing military aggression against Ukraine, inflicting severe harm on civilians and critical infrastructure. The restoration of damaged properties and aid for victims will require substantial resources and concerted efforts from both the Ukrainian government and the international community. Amid persistent aerial threats, maintaining robust defense readiness is essential to safeguard Ukrainian cities and their inhabitants.
The recent missile and drone strikes are part of a larger pattern of intensified assaults on Ukraine, as seen in a previous attack involving 157 drones and missiles. This escalation underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Ukrainian air defenses, which have successfully neutralized numerous threats.
