Escalating Russian Strikes Target Ukraine’s Port Facilities

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha emphasized that these attacks on maritime transportation undermine the foundation of worldwide food supply. He highlighted the need for coordinated efforts with Poland to restore freedom of navigation and expressed gratitude to the European Union for reinstating the 'Corridors of Solidarity'.

Repeated Attacks on Civilian Ships

Since early July, Russian forces have repeatedly targeted civilian ships. On July 13, a civilian cargo vessel flying the Togolese flag, while unloading mineral fertilizers in port, was struck by Russian forces, causing the deaths of three crew members. The following day, July 14, Russian attacks hit port infrastructure in the Odessa region. A drone strike damaged a civilian vessel registered under the Marshall Islands flag, resulting in two fatalities.

On July 17, a missile attack by Russian forces further damaged port facilities in Odessa. The strike affected a civilian ship whose 17-member crew was evacuated safely; four individuals received medical treatment but were not hospitalized. In addition to this, buildings, storage tanks, and warehouses suffered damage. Moreover, a Russian drone attacked a Chinese merchant vessel within Ukraine’s territorial waters.

Minister Sybiha stressed the urgency of vigilance to prevent further threats, stating, "Russia’s missile terror has halted maritime traffic and navigation in the Black Sea, which in turn destabilizes global food security."

About 90% of Ukraine’s exports of wheat, corn, and sunflower seeds pass through Black Sea ports. With military threats escalating, the disruption of sea routes jeopardizes grain exports and could impact global food prices. Ukraine has proposed a mutual ceasefire with Russia on attacks against civilian maritime traffic to ensure safe navigation in the region.

These developments highlight the precarious state of Ukraine’s port infrastructure and the wider risks to the global food market. As one of the world’s leading grain suppliers, any escalation in the conflict threatens food security for many nations reliant on Ukrainian exports. Restoring safe passage in the Black Sea is becoming an increasingly urgent issue for the international community.
