Russia Aims to Establish Winter Buffer Zone in Sumy and Chernihiv with Mobilized Reserves

According to ХВИЛЯ: Russia is preparing to set up a buffer zone in the Sumy and Chernihiv regions, deploying part of its mobilization reserves as winter approaches. The primary goal is to restrict Ukrainian forces' movements and sustain continued shelling of Kyiv. September marks the peak of Russia’s summer offensive, but deteriorating weather conditions-including heavy rain, fog, and shorter daylight hours-are expected to force a tactical shift in October.

Military Experts Weigh In

Brigadier General Denis Prokopenko, commander of the 1st Azov National Guard Corps, commented on the situation, stating:

“We anticipate September will be the climax of the summer offensive since the adversary needs to demonstrate some kind of success.” – Denis Prokopenko

He added that in October, Russian forces are likely to abandon small-footprint infantry tactics in favor of deploying heavier armored vehicles to attempt mechanized breakthroughs deep into Ukrainian defenses. Similar tactics were unsuccessfully employed during last autumn and winter.

According to Prokopenko, Ukrainian units are capable of destroying up to 50 enemy light and heavy vehicles daily. “Our corps can eliminate as many as 50 enemy cars and trucks each day using assets like the Hornet system and night strikes,” he explained. This ongoing attrition complicates Russian logistics, troop movements, and operational planning.

Prokopenko also highlighted the potential use of mobilized reserves by Russia to slow down Ukrainian advances:
