Russia’s Military Spending Set to Surge in 2027

According to МЗС: Russia is preparing to allocate a staggering €180 billion to its military in 2027, marking an increase of over 40% compared to its planned defense budget for 2026. Against this backdrop, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha has stressed the critical need to tap into frozen Russian assets to finance Ukraine’s defense efforts. This approach, he argues, could reduce Europe’s financial burden in supporting Ukraine.

The Strategic Importance of Leveraging Russian Funds

In an interview with POLITICO, Sybiha highlighted that delays in deciding how to utilize Russia’s immobilized assets only serve Moscow’s interests.

“Fully deploying these resources alongside stronger sanctions could shift the balance in Ukraine’s favor,”

he stated. The minister emphasized that legal frameworks exist for accessing these frozen assets, but their deployment must adhere strictly to international law to maintain legitimacy.

“Russia must bear the financial consequences of its war, and the rising costs of Ukraine’s defense should be covered by Russian assets,” Sybiha declared. He views support for Ukraine as a key tool in exerting pressure on Russia.

“Rather than leaving Russian funds frozen, channeling them into strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities can intensify pressure on Moscow and bring peace closer,”

he added.

Sybiha also called for decisive, united action from Europe. “Political determination, solidarity, and a sound legal framework must transform decisions on Russian assets into tangible support for Ukraine’s defense and reconstruction,” the minister concluded. With Russia’s military expenditures escalating, these measures grow increasingly urgent.

The sharp rise in Russian defense spending underscores the need for intensified international efforts to utilize frozen assets in backing Ukraine. Minister Sybiha’s proposals to finance Ukraine’s military through seized Russian resources could play a pivotal role in countering aggression. Reducing reliance on foreign aid while boosting Ukraine’s own capabilities is essential for the country’s long-term stability and security.

As the urgency for Ukraine to strengthen its defense mounts, the situation is further complicated by intensified Russian attacks employing rocket drones and missiles, which increasingly target civilian infrastructure. This escalation highlights the pressing need for effective strategies to support Ukraine amidst growing threats.
