Russia's Religious Outreach in the Czech Republic

According to Главком: In an interview with the publication 'Hlavkom,' Ukrainian Ambassador to the Czech Republic Vasyl Zvarych detailed Russia's attempts to expand its influence in the country through religious institutions. He noted a significant increase in the number of Russian religious figures operating there, following the expulsion of 18 Russian diplomats during the previous term of Prime Minister Andrej Babiš. Zvarych emphasized that Russian propaganda is actively exploiting principles of free speech and church institutions to advance its own objectives. This tactic is part of a broader pattern of Russian hybrid warfare seen across Europe.

A Strategic Partnership Endures

This Russian influence is notably present within the Russian Orthodox Church and the Orthodox Church of the Czech Lands and Slovakia. The activities of these churches are now under close scrutiny by Czech national security agencies. Zvarych highlighted a curious correlation:

"When the current Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, during his previous term… expelled 18 Russian diplomats from the Czech Republic, the number of Russian religious figures in the country somehow immediately increased. A strange coincidence, you might say." - Vasyl Zvarych

Despite these pressures and changes in government, the Czech Republic has maintained its strategic partnership with Ukraine. It continues to participate in key defense initiatives and provide support within the European Union framework. The country is also preparing amendments to the rules for Ukrainians with temporary protection, which will involve stricter controls and checks. Zvarych observed that a segment of Czech society holds nostalgic views of Russia:

"In the Czech Republic, there is a category of people who harbor certain nostalgic notions about Russia from older times, about the Soviet system. But such people exist in every democratic society." - Vasyl Zvarych

The ambassador's statement is significant as it underscores the potential risks of foreign influence on Czech domestic politics, particularly through religious organizations. This could raise concerns among Czech authorities and the public about possible attempts at destabilization. Nevertheless, the Czech Republic's ongoing support for Ukraine in defense matters demonstrates the resilience of their strategic partnership in the face of shared challenges.

The evolving political landscape in the Czech Republic further complicates its relationship with Ukraine, especially in light of recent developments.
