Russia and Iran Strike Deal for 'Verba' Air Defense Systems

According to Главком: Russia and Iran have concluded a confidential arms agreement for the supply of 'Verba' man-portable air-defense systems (MANPADS). Valued at approximately €500 million, the delivery of these systems is scheduled to take place over a three-year period. This deal represents one of the largest arms contracts between the two nations in recent years and underscores the deepening military partnership between the Kremlin and Tehran. This growing alliance occurs against a backdrop of heightened regional tensions and Western sanctions targeting both countries.

Contract Specifications

Under the terms of the contract, Iran will receive:

  • 500 'Verba' MANPADS launchers, each priced at €40,000;
  • 2,500 '9M336' surface-to-air missiles, with each missile costing €170,000;
  • 500 'Mowgli-2' night vision devices to enhance the system's operational capability in darkness.

The 'Verba' system features a three-channel infrared homing seeker and is capable of intercepting cruise missiles, drones, and low-altitude aircraft. It is also suitable for providing mobile cover for ground forces, making it a strategically significant asset for both nations. The details of this agreement were initially reported by the Financial Times and subsequently confirmed by 'Glavcom'.

This contract signals a significant strengthening of military cooperation between Russia and Iran amid ongoing international sanctions and geopolitical friction. The successful fulfillment of the deal could substantially enhance Iran's military capabilities, potentially altering the balance of power in the Middle East. This development reflects a broader trend of deepening alliances among nations facing international isolation, a dynamic with potential implications for regional security and global stability.
