Deadly Attack on Residential Building in Znob-Novhorodske Community

According to Главком: In the early hours of June 22, Russian forces used a drone to strike a home in the Znob-Novhorodske community, located in the Shostka district of Ukraine's Sumy region. The attack claimed three lives, among them a 13-year-old boy. According to investigators, the strike occurred around 4:50 AM. The drone hit a house belonging to a large family, sparking a fire that quickly engulfed the structure.

Killed at the scene were:

  • A 36-year-old man;
  • His 13-year-old son;
  • A 73-year-old woman, the mother of the man's partner.

Additionally, the following individuals sustained injuries:

  • A 31-year-old woman;
  • A 10-year-old boy;
  • A 13-year-old girl.

According to the head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration, the girl is in critical condition in the intensive care unit. Prosecutors, together with law enforcement, are documenting the aftermath of yet another war crime attributed to Russia. A criminal investigation has been launched for violating the laws and customs of war, resulting in loss of life. The pre-trial inquiry is being conducted by the Security Service of Ukraine in the Sumy region.

Other Communities in Sumy Region Also Targeted

Over the past day, Russian forces also struck other communities in the Sumy region. In the Hlukhiv community, drone attacks triggered a massive fire that destroyed three residential buildings, with a child also reported among the injured. In the Krasnopillia community, emergency crews responded to a strike on a private home, while in the city of Sumy, a drone damaged an apartment building. Separately, on the evening of June 21, the enemy launched a missile strike on civilian infrastructure in the Odesa region, hitting an agricultural enterprise. Rescue officials reported that the impact caused a large-scale fire, engulfing a warehouse, vehicles, and containers holding fuel and lubricants.

This attack underscores Russia's continued aggression against Ukrainian civilians, leading to severe humanitarian consequences. Under international law, such actions constitute war crimes, likely requiring intensified efforts by Ukraine and global organizations to hold perpetrators accountable. The situation in the Sumy region and beyond highlights the growing threat to non-combatants in a conflict now approaching its third year.
