Russia Strikes Bridge Near Odesa in Bid to Disrupt Grain Exports

Mayaky Bridge Targeted

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: Russian forces are believed to have struck the bridge at Mayaky in the Odesa region as part of an attempt to halt Ukrainian grain exports moving through an alternate overland corridor. According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Moscow has been escalating its campaign against Ukraine's export capacity since July 2026. The focus of attacks has shifted from Ukraine's maritime corridor to land-based routes, with the apparent goal of choking off grain revenue and weakening the broader economy.

Damage to the Agricultural Sector

This was not the first attack on the Mayaky bridge: Russian troops hit it in December 2025 as well. In another incident, strikes on the night of July 19 destroyed 60,000 metric tons of grain at the port of Chornomorsk. Ukrainian Navy spokesman Dmytro Pletenchuk reported on July 31 that more than 20 vessels had been damaged and the maritime corridor had slowed considerably. On July 15, the Ukrainian Agrarian Council estimated that the country had lost roughly one-third of its grain export capacity because of Russian missile and drone strikes against port infrastructure.

Agriculture Minister Taras Vysotskyi said the attacks have forced Ukraine to look for alternative shipping routes via the Danube River. Against that backdrop, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced on August 9 that Ankara had proposed a mutual moratorium with Russia and Ukraine on strikes against commercial vessels in the Black Sea.

The assault on Chornomorsk also affected Kernel, Ukraine's largest exporter of grain and sunflower oil, whose port terminals have been halted. The agro-industrial holding Allseeds suspended its operations in the Odesa region because of heightened attack risks, while Maersk temporarily suspended shipments through the Chornomorsk Fishery Port and has been redirecting import cargo to the Romanian port of Constanta.

Over the past several days, Russian forces have hit at least three civilian cargo ships in the Black Sea. In response, Ukraine has called for an urgent UN Security Council meeting, citing the danger to global food security. Monthly cargo transshipment through affected routes has already dropped from about 6 million tons to 4 million tons.

The escalation is putting immense pressure on Ukraine's economy, particularly its vital agricultural sector. Because Ukraine ranks among the world's top grain producers, damage to its export infrastructure could have serious consequences for global food supplies, making international diplomatic action increasingly urgent.

The ongoing attacks on Ukraine's export infrastructure are not only limited to the Mayaky bridge. Recent reports indicate that Russian strikes on Black Sea ports are projected to significantly reduce Ukrainian agricultural exports, underscoring the broader implications of these military actions on the country's economy.
