Russia Strikes Maternity Wards in Odesa, Sloviansk, and Kherson
Attacks on Medical Facilities in Ukraine
According to Главком: On June 1, the Russian army targeted civilian infrastructure in southern Odesa Oblast. The attack damaged a maternity ward and administrative buildings at a hospital, shattering its facade, doors, and over 30 windows. At the time of the strike, six new mothers and their infants were in the maternity ward, with one woman actively giving birth. Fortunately, neither patients nor medical staff were harmed. Hospital director Oleh Kiper stated:
'The attack damaged the maternity ward and the hospital's administrative buildings. Thankfully, the patients and staff are safe. Cleanup and recovery efforts are underway.' Oleh Kiper
In a separate incident, Russian forces dropped an aerial bomb on the center of Sloviansk in Donetsk Oblast, damaging the region's only maternity hospital. Once again, the newborns, mothers, and medical personnel escaped injury. The head of Sloviansk's military administration confirmed: 'Fortunately, neither the babies, the women in labor, nor the hospital staff were hurt.'
In Kherson, the Russian army shelled a perinatal center while doctors were performing a delivery. The Kherson Regional Military Administration reported that 'Russian terrorists continue their brutal war against children-even those not yet born.' These events underscore the severe threats facing civilians amid the ongoing conflict.
Consequences of Attacks on Civilian Targets
These assaults on healthcare facilities highlight the dangers civilians endure during hostilities. The rising number of strikes on maternity hospitals and clinics reflects a pattern of aggression that spares no one, not even the most vulnerable. As the war continues, monitoring the situation and international efforts to protect civilians and medical infrastructure remains critical. In times of war, safeguarding human life and health must be a priority, and such incidents provoke deep global concern.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in devastating consequences for civilians, particularly children. Recent reports indicate that children have been injured in drone strikes in Odesa and Kherson regions, highlighting the urgent need for international attention and action to safeguard vulnerable populations amidst these aggressive military operations.
