Abduction of Ukrainian Civilians

According to Главком: Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine's Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights, has reported that Russian occupying forces have abducted 19 civilians from the village of Sopych in the Sumy region's Esman community. According to his information, contact with the citizens was lost, and their interviews subsequently appeared on a Russian television channel. This incident is part of a broader pattern of human rights violations documented since Russia's full-scale invasion began in February 2022.

The village of Sopych is located near the border, and the abducted citizens had remained there despite an announced evacuation order. Lubinets has appealed to Russia's human rights commissioner, demanding the 'immediate organization of an urgent visit to these Ukrainian citizens, to report back on their health and detention conditions following the visit, and, most importantly, to ensure their swift return home.'

The abduction of civilians has caused serious alarm both within Ukraine and among the international community.

Call for Action

The kidnapping of civilians during conflict constitutes a grave breach of international norms and human rights, raising concerns far beyond Ukraine's borders. The Human Rights Commissioner is calling for concrete actions to help secure the safety and return of the abducted individuals.

This situation underscores the critical importance of adhering to international humanitarian law during armed conflict and highlights the urgent need for international support in investigating such incidents. The Geneva Conventions explicitly prohibit the unlawful deportation and confinement of civilians.
