Ukraine Intercepts 161 Drones in Major March 9th Assault, But Some Targets Hit
Details and Consequences of the Attack on Ukraine
According to Главком: In the early hours of March 9, Russia launched a massive combined assault on Ukraine using missiles and drones. Preliminary reports indicate the attack involved 2 Iskander-M ballistic missiles and 197 one-way attack drones of various types, including Shahed, Gerbera, and Itlamas. By 08:00, Ukrainian air defense forces had managed to shoot down or jam 161 of these unmanned aerial vehicles.
Despite these defensive efforts, impacts from 2 missiles and 36 drones were recorded, with debris falling in nine different locations. This latest large-scale strike is part of a pattern of intensified aerial bombardments targeting Ukrainian infrastructure and population centers. In a separate, prior incident in the Sumy region, five people were reported injured due to shelling.
Ukraine's Defense Forces and Their Response
The following units were deployed to counter the attack:
- Air Force
- Anti-aircraft missile troops
- Electronic warfare units
- Mobile fire groups of the Ukrainian Defense Forces
The assault targeted regions in the north, south, and east of the country.
This attack is part of the ongoing, full-scale war that Russia initiated against Ukraine over two years ago. The increasing scale and frequency of such combined missile and drone barrages represent a significant tactical challenge. While Ukrainian air defenses continue to adapt and improve their interception rates, the threat to civilian safety and critical infrastructure remains severe in conflict zones.
