Russia Launches 76 Strikes on Ukraine’s Energy Grid, Leaving Tens of Thousands Without Power
Targeted Assaults on Ukraine’s Energy and Oil-Gas Infrastructure
According to МЗС: Over the past week, Russia has carried out 76 separate attacks aimed at Ukraine’s energy and oil-gas sectors in an effort to trigger widespread blackouts. Nighttime strikes damaged substations in the Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr, Khmelnytskyi, and Odesa regions, cutting electricity to tens of thousands of households. These attacks resulted in 12 injuries, including two children, and two fatalities. In total, Russian forces deployed nearly 2,700 strike drones, 1,700 aerial bombs, and 66 missiles-most of which were ballistic. Early morning also saw a strike on an agricultural facility in Volyn. Ukrainian emergency teams are actively working to restore power and provide aid to affected civilians.
Government Response and Ongoing Situation
The assault on Ukraine’s power infrastructure has left tens of thousands without electricity. Official reports confirm 12 people wounded, including two minors, and two deaths. President Volodymyr Zelensky extended condolences to the families of the victims and emphasized that emergency services remain fully engaged in mitigating the damage caused by these attacks.
"The primary targets of these strikes are the energy systems; Russia aims to cause blackouts."
Volodymyr Zelensky
President Zelensky highlighted that Russia has shown no willingness to negotiate or respond positively to sanctions relief or agreements. Instead, he noted, "Every sign of potential gain is interpreted by Russia as encouragement to keep pursuing the war." He stressed that the ongoing conflict persists due to Russia’s stance, not because Ukraine is defending itself.
The situation across Ukraine remains tense, with repair crews working around the clock to restore electricity. The government continues to implement measures to safeguard citizens and rebuild critical infrastructure damaged in the attacks.
These assaults reflect Russia’s ongoing strategy to destabilize Ukraine by targeting vital infrastructure. The civilian population bears the brunt of these attacks, underscoring the severe humanitarian impact of the war. Meanwhile, the swift response from Ukrainian authorities and President Zelensky underscores the nation’s determination to recover and protect its people.
The recent escalation in attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure has raised significant concerns, especially in light of the coordinated strikes that followed a ceasefire announcement. This pattern of aggression underscores the ongoing volatility in the region and highlights the challenges faced by Ukrainian authorities in restoring stability and power to affected areas.
