Russia's New Tactical Focus in Ukraine

According to Зеленський: Russia appears to have altered its military approach in Ukraine, moving away from widespread attacks on the energy grid. This was evident overnight into Friday, when most regions did not experience the usual mass strikes on power facilities. Instead, the focus shifted to hitting logistical hubs and key railway stations. A notable exception was a single airstrike on gas infrastructure in the Donetsk region.

In the morning, a special power-generating railcar belonging to Ukrzaliznytsia, Ukraine's state railway, was struck in the Dnipropetrovsk region. Attacks using drones and aerial bombs are ongoing, particularly in the Kharkiv region. There, a ballistic missile strike targeted warehouses owned by the American company Philip Morris, igniting a major fire. Additional strikes were recorded in:

  • Nikopol
  • Kherson
  • Border areas of the Kharkiv, Sumy, and Chernihiv regions

Strategic Shifts on Both Sides

According to U.S. sources, Ukraine has also refrained from striking Russian energy infrastructure for a week. This mutual restraint may signal evolving strategic calculations by both parties in the protracted conflict. The shift in Russian tactics likely represents an adaptation to battlefield conditions, with strikes on logistics aiming to cripple military supply chains and impact operational capabilities. Meanwhile, Ukraine's reported pause in targeting Russia's energy sector, as relayed by American officials, could be part of an effort to de-escalate tensions and explore potential diplomatic avenues.
