Pattern of Attacks on Railway Infrastructure
This incident is part of a broader series of assaults on Ukraine's railway network. On June 25, Russian forces targeted locomotives operated by Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia) in Zaporizhzhia and the Sumy region. Two strikes occurred in Zaporizhzhia and one in Sumy Oblast. Two train crews were evacuated in time and escaped unharmed. However, a third strike in Zaporizhzhia killed an assistant driver who was in the rear cabin; the driver managed to move to safety.
Oleksandr Pertsovskyi commented: 'Today the enemy continued to deliberately target Ukrzaliznytsia locomotives. Two crews were evacuated in time and no one was hurt, but the third strike in Zaporizhzhia ended in tragedy.'
Earlier, on June 12, a Russian attack on railway infrastructure in the Sumy region resulted in the death of a female railway worker. Preliminary reports indicate she was heading to a mobile shelter during an air raid alert. Ukrzaliznytsia expressed condolences to her family and pledged to provide necessary support.
Representatives of Ukrzaliznytsia stated: 'A female employee of a railway facility was killed in the strike. A mobile shelter had been installed at the site. The monitoring group had issued advance warnings about heightened danger.'
The situation on the railways remains tense, with authorities taking all possible measures to ensure the safety of workers and passengers.
This wave of attacks on railway infrastructure highlights the ongoing threat faced by Ukrainian railway personnel amid the conflict.
