Russia Launches Combined Assault on Ukraine

According to Главком: In the early hours of March 24, Russian forces launched a combined assault on Ukraine, deploying drones and missiles. The attack targeted the nation's energy facilities and critical infrastructure. Ukrainian air defense forces successfully intercepted all of the cruise missiles involved, specifically 18 Kh-101 missiles and five Iskander-K missiles. However, ballistic missiles reached their targets, striking front-line territories, including the Zaporizhzhia and Poltava regions.

Damage was reported across 11 oblasts, with consumers in six regions left without power. Yuriy Ihnat, spokesperson for the Air Force Command, stated:

“A significant number of drones were recorded today, with a large portion of them shot down. All cruise missiles were also shot down-these were 18 Kh-101s and five Iskander-Ks. Every cruise missile was intercepted.” - Yuriy Ihnat

He further emphasized that 'regarding ballistic missiles, unfortunately, the results are not encouraging, because the nature of the strike hit front-line territories.' The attack confirms that the adversary continues to employ a large number of drones, using up to eight different vectors. “They already have such typical routes, understanding where our weak spots might be,” Yuriy Ihnat added. These sustained attacks aim to degrade Ukraine's civilian infrastructure and test its defensive resilience.

Air Defense Demonstrates Growing Effectiveness

This marks the second consecutive instance where all cruise missiles have been shot down, highlighting the increasing effectiveness of Ukraine's air defense systems. The regions struck by ballistic missiles, including Zaporizhzhia and Poltava, confirm the continued focus of attacks on the country's critical infrastructure.

The assault underscores Russia's ongoing aggression and its intent to inflict damage on Ukraine, particularly targeting energy security. While Ukraine's significant efforts to enhance its air defense have shown progress in protecting its airspace, as evidenced by the successful interception of cruise missiles, the ballistic strikes highlight persistent challenges. These attacks remain a serious threat to regional stability and civilian safety.

The recent successful interception of cruise missiles by Ukrainian air defense highlights a growing trend in the effectiveness of these systems. This follows a similar event on March 14, where all cruise missiles were also brought down, although civilian sites were still targeted.
