Внаслідок російського удару по видавництву BookChef у Києві знищено 800 тисяч книг.

Massive Attack on Kyiv Devastates BookChef's Operations

According to Главком: In the early hours of July 2, a large-scale Russian assault targeted Kyiv, destroying the central warehouse of Denka Logistics-the logistics partner for the publishing house BookChef. The attack resulted in the loss of approximately 800,000 books. Fortunately, no BookChef employees were harmed in the incident.

As a direct consequence of the warehouse's destruction, BookChef has temporarily suspended all promotional campaigns with its partner bookstores. The company is currently unable to receive, process, or ship orders as usual. Oleksandr Kirpichov, CEO of BookChef, stated:

'For the time being, we cannot accept, process, or dispatch orders in the normal way. This may cause difficulties and delays, even for new print runs of books. We ask for your patience and understanding as we work to restore our logistics.'

Cultural Fallout: How the Strike Impacts Ukraine's Literary Landscape

The assault on Kyiv ranks among the most intense of the conflict, involving drones, ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as hypersonic Zircon missiles. A total of 28 locations across the capital were hit. According to Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, 11 fatalities have been confirmed, with over 30 people wounded. The attack also damaged Kyiv's energy infrastructure, including facilities operated by DTEK, leaving parts of the city without power.

For BookChef, this incident represents a devastating cultural blow. As company representatives noted:

'These are books that authors, translators, editors, illustrators, designers, printers, managers, and logistics teams worked on. They represent years of effort by a great many people.'

This attack underscores not only the human toll of the war but also its damaging effect on Ukraine's cultural sector. The destruction of such a vast number of books threatens to slow the country's literary and educational development, as high-quality publications are essential to fostering a vibrant cultural environment. Restoring logistics and securing new print runs will require significant time and effort from publishers and their partners.

The recent missile strike on Kyiv not only devastated BookChef's operations but also significantly impacted the cultural heritage of the city. Similar to the destruction faced by the Dovzhenko Film Studio, which saw its unique costume collection obliterated, this attack highlights the broader implications of the ongoing conflict on Ukraine's artistic landscape.
