The Case of Viktoriia Listunova

According to Главком: Russian gymnast Viktoriia Listunova and the Russian Gymnastics Federation (RGF) have filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after she was denied neutral athlete status. The International Gymnastics Federation (World Gymnastics) decided to bar Listunova from international competition due to actions deemed supportive of the war. This case highlights the ongoing challenges sports governing bodies face in separating athletes from state actions.

In 2022, Listunova, an Olympic and European champion, participated in a pro-war rally alongside Vladimir Putin, wearing clothing with the letter 'Z'. Furthermore, on her social media, she promoted fundraising efforts for Russian gymnast Kravchenko, whose father-an occupying soldier-was killed in combat against Ukraine.

Broader Context

This situation unfolds as the International Olympic Committee has permitted Russian cross-country skier Daria Nepryaeva to compete in the Olympics. In the summer of 2022, Nepryaeva illegally visited annexed Crimea for training camps and, along with other Russian skiers, crossed into Ukraine without passing through customs or border control. The contrasting treatment of athletes has sparked debate about the consistency of international sports sanctions.

The Russian Gymnastics Federation deems it appropriate to seek an independent legal assessment of the decision from CAS. The outcome of this appeal could set a significant precedent for the eligibility of Russian athletes in global sports, underscoring the tension between sport and geopolitics following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
