Russian Airstrikes Devastate Sloviansk on October 17: Six Dead and Over 20 Homes Damaged
Devastation Strikes Sloviansk
According to Рубрика — Суспільство: On October 17, Russian air attacks on Sloviansk resulted in the deaths of six individuals and injuries to 15 others. More than 20 residential buildings were severely damaged across the city. Rescue teams continue to search through rubble for survivors and recover the bodies of those who perished beneath collapsed structures.
The attacks involved four aerial bombs dropped on the city's private housing areas by Russian forces. Fires broke out at three different sites following the strikes; although these were contained, firefighting efforts were temporarily halted due to safety risks. Additionally, attacks by FPV drones contributed to fatalities. According to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service, three people died and two were wounded specifically from the air bombings.
Ongoing Rescue Efforts Amid Security Challenges
As of October 18, several bodies remain trapped beneath the ruins of bombed buildings. Vadym Liakh reported that rescue operations were paused overnight because of security concerns but resumed early the next morning. On the same day of the airstrikes, Russian forces targeted a residential neighborhood in Sloviansk, killing one person and injuring ten more in two apartment buildings.
This latest violence follows similar air raids conducted by Russian troops on October 14 in Kramatorsk, Donetsk region, where multi-story residential buildings were hit, resulting in four injuries and fatalities. Liakh also noted that some FPV drone strikes have caused deadly consequences. The ongoing attacks have heightened anxiety among local residents and emergency responders striving to assist those affected.
The situation in Sloviansk and its surrounding areas remains highly volatile due to continuous military offensives that inflict heavy casualties and widespread destruction. The extensive damage to civilian infrastructure poses severe risks to the population’s safety and hinders rescue operations. These incidents underscore a growing pattern of escalating violence in the region, emphasizing the urgent need for measures to protect civilians and restore essential services.
Sloviansk, located in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk Oblast, has been a focal point of conflict since 2014, making these recent attacks part of a prolonged struggle impacting many communities in the area.
In light of the recent airstrikes, the situation in Sloviansk remains precarious, echoing previous incidents where Russian shelling caused significant damage to the city. Just days earlier, four individuals were injured and ten buildings suffered extensive damage due to similar attacks.
