Russian Drone Attacks on Railway Infrastructure

According to Главком: Russian drones struck railway facilities in the Dnipropetrovsk region, damaging two locomotives. Importantly, no casualties or injuries resulted from the attack, as locomotive crews managed to move to safety after an air raid warning was issued. This was reported by Oleksiy Kuleba, Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration and Minister of Communities and Territories, in a post on his Telegram channel.

Since the start of 2026, Russian forces have destroyed or damaged over 200 locomotives. In May 2026, a similar attack on railway infrastructure in the Dnipropetrovsk region injured a train driver. Beyond Dnipropetrovsk, strikes on railways have also been recorded in the Odesa, Kharkiv, and Poltava regions. Specifically,

  • On June 25, the Russian army attacked Ukrzaliznytsia locomotives in Zaporizhzhia and Sumy regions;
  • On June 30, a drone struck an electric locomotive in the Dnipropetrovsk region.

Oleksiy Kuleba emphasized that

'each such attack inflicts new damage on the Ukrainian railway, which has been operating under the constant threat of shelling for the fourth consecutive year.'

He also noted that 'since the beginning of 2026 alone, Russian forces have destroyed or damaged over 200 locomotives.' These events indicate that Russia is increasingly targeting the railway, which has serious consequences for Ukraine's logistics and economy.

Economic Consequences of the Attacks

The strikes on railway infrastructure highlight not only military objectives but also economic repercussions, as the railway is a vital component of Ukraine's logistics networks. The destruction or damage of locomotives complicates freight and passenger transportation, which in turn can affect the supply of goods and the level of economic activity in the regions. Given that such attacks are becoming more frequent, Ukraine must consider measures to protect critical infrastructure.

The ongoing attacks on railway infrastructure are part of a broader strategy that poses significant challenges to Ukraine's logistics and economy.
