Russian Skaters Voice Their Frustrations

According to Главком: Figure skaters Elizaveta Osokina and Artem Gritsaenko have openly shared their distress over being barred from international competitions. In a conversation with state-aligned media, Gritsaenko stated that their ultimate goal is to compete on the global stage and at the Olympic Games. He emphasized how difficult the suspension has been for athletes like them.

'Our goal is to finally take part in international tournaments. We’ve been waiting for years! And of course, to go to the Olympics. Like most athletes. The suspension has been really tough on us,' said Artem Gritsaenko.

The skater added that previously, they believed competing abroad was pointless unless they achieved high rankings at the Russian National Championships. However, that mindset has shifted: 'Now it doesn’t work that way anymore. We want to prove ourselves both at home and on the international stage.' Gritsaenko also noted that training domestically cannot compare to preparing abroad: 'How can we train alongside them, skate, and compete? That’s also mental preparation. We can’t wait to experience that again-the fight against the world.'

The Broader Sports Landscape

The report also highlights Russian gymnast Ilteryakova, who has actively endorsed the war against Ukraine on social media. She has liked posts featuring dictator Vladimir Putin and Russian military personnel. Ilteryakova follows the account of Nikita Nagorny, who faces sanctions from Ukraine, Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union for supporting Russian aggression against Ukraine.

Additionally, she subscribes to the page of propagandist Shaman, who is also sanctioned by Canada, the EU, and Ukraine. Ilteryakova has liked Shaman’s posts and follows a fan page for Alina Kabaeva, who has been sanctioned for backing Russian aggression.

The exclusion of Russian athletes from global events stems from the ongoing political tensions on the world stage, significantly impacting their careers. Many have expressed a strong desire to return to competition, underscoring their determination to compete at an international level. At the same time, some athletes’ support for the war has sparked controversy and condemnation from the international community, potentially complicating the situation for Russia’s entire sports environment.

As the debate surrounding Russian athletes intensifies, the recent warning issued to a Russian gymnast over an anthem protocol violation highlights the growing scrutiny faced by sports figures from the region. This incident underscores the complexities of competing in a politically charged environment, which adds further pressure on athletes like Gritsaenko and Osokina as they navigate their aspirations amidst geopolitical tensions.
