Russian Skater Shares Positive Impressions from Italian Games

According to Главком: Russian short-track speed skater Elena Krylova has described her experience at the Olympic Games in Italy as positive. She stated she feels excellent, praised the quality of the ice on both the main and training arenas, and found conditions in the Olympic village comfortable. Krylova commented:

“Everything is great, the feeling couldn't be better. The ice is good on the main and training arenas. In the Olympic village, everything is convenient, no problems at all”

. She also noted that while communication with foreign athletes occurs, it is not particularly active due to the language barrier.

Propaganda Events Contradict Neutral Status

Krylova and other Russian and Belarusian athletes are competing in Italy under a neutral status. Her women's 500m qualification event is scheduled for February 10th. However, despite this neutral designation, some Russian athletes have been observed at propaganda events. Notably, speed skater Aleksandra Sayutina, recognized as a neutral athlete by the International Skating Union (ISU), attended Vladimir Putin's annual address to the Federal Assembly on February 29, 2024.

Furthermore, Russian cross-country skier Veronika Stepanova posted an Instagram photo from the event attended by Sayutina, featuring Putin's associates and Russian military personnel involved in the war against Ukraine. Participation in such propaganda activities constitutes a clear breach of the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) guidelines for neutral athletes. This situation raises serious concerns as it undermines the very principles of neutrality in international sports competitions. The IOC's rules explicitly prohibit neutral athletes from engaging in political demonstrations or supporting their nation's military actions.

The participation of Russian athletes in international competitions under a neutral banner remains a contentious issue against the backdrop of ongoing geopolitical tensions. The protracted conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to cast a long shadow over global sports. It is crucial for international sports federations to rigorously uphold their neutrality principles to ensure fair competitive conditions and shield athletic events from political influence.
