Russian Forces Target Three Trains in Sumy and Dnipro-Zaporizhzhia Regions, Causing Casualties

Attacks on Ukraine’s Railway System

These attacks resulted in at least eight injured individuals and the death of one railway worker. Following the strikes, the trains were halted and passengers evacuated.

The evacuation process faced complications when communication was lost with a conductor who reportedly returned to one of the trains. After the attack on the regional train, a fire broke out in one carriage of the electric train, followed by a second fire approximately 30 minutes later in another carriage.

These incidents come amid a series of drone attacks targeting Ukraine’s railway infrastructure. Earlier the same day, Russian drones struck a Kyiv–Sumy passenger train, though no injuries were reported in that attack. Railway official Oleksandr Pertsovskyi emphasized that

“railway vehicles and infrastructure in frontline communities are among the primary targets for the enemy.”

Ongoing Threats and Railway Safety Measures

Earlier, on August 23, Russian forces struck a passenger train traveling from Zhytomyr to Odesa for the second time, with no casualties reported. However, in other attacks, such as the strike on the Lozova–Kharkiv train, one passenger was killed. On August 13, a drone strike resulted in the deaths of a train driver and their assistant, although 340 passengers were safely evacuated.

Given the constant danger to rail transport, caution remains critical. Oleksandr Pertsovskyi noted that

“preliminary data indicates not all passengers were at a safe distance-some suffered shrapnel wounds.”
