Civilian Ship Struck by Russian Drone in the Black Sea, Fatalities Reported
Deadly Strike on the VICTRESS in Black Sea Waters
According to Главком: A Russian unmanned aerial vehicle targeted the foreign civilian cargo ship VICTRESS in the Black Sea, igniting a massive blaze onboard. The vessel, owned by a Turkish company and sailing under the Panamanian flag, had its crew evacuated by Ukrainian Navy boats. At the time of the attack, nine sailors from Egypt, Turkey, and India were aboard. Tragically, lives were lost during the evacuation.
Ukraine's Naval Forces confirmed that 'given the difficult conditions and the risk of the fire spreading further, crews of Ukrainian Navy boats successfully carried out a rescue operation to evacuate the dry cargo ship's crew, but unfortunately there are casualties among them.' This incident serves as yet another example of Russia's ongoing aggressive actions in the region.
“This case once again demonstrates that the Russian Federation continues to violate international maritime law and pose threats to civilian navigation.” - Ukrainian Navy
Regional Tensions on the Rise
This attack comes just days after Russian drones hit two civilian vessels leaving ports in the Odesa region. One of those ships, also flying a Panamanian flag, suffered the death of a crew member and injuries to two others. A second vessel, registered under the flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis, had three sailors wounded. The situation in the area remains volatile, and further strikes on civilian shipping could jeopardize the safety of international maritime traffic.
The assault on the VICTRESS highlights the escalating tensions in the Black Sea, where Russia continues its hostile actions against non-military shipping. This not only endangers seafarers' lives but also alarms global trade partners, as secure sea lanes are vital to the world economy. Emphasizing the breach of international law, Ukrainian military officials warn that additional attacks could occur, potentially fueling further conflict in the region.
The recent attack on the VICTRESS is part of a troubling pattern of aggression in the Black Sea. Just days before, another incident saw a Vanuatu-flagged cargo ship targeted by a Russian drone, underscoring the increasing risks to civilian vessels in the region.
