Russian Drone Strikes Residential High-Rise in Romania
Drone Incident in Galati Raises Alarm
According to ХВИЛЯ: On the night of May 29, a Russian drone struck a multi-story apartment building in the Romanian city of Galati. The unmanned aerial vehicle hit the structure at the 10th floor level, leaving two people injured. To ensure resident safety, roughly 70 individuals were evacuated from the building. Bomb disposal experts arriving at the scene determined that all of the drone's explosives had detonated.
Romania and International Community Respond
Romania's Ministry of Defense confirmed the drone was of Russian origin. In an attempt to intercept the aircraft, two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled from the Fetesti airbase at 1:19 AM, supported by a helicopter. Pilots were granted authorization to engage the target. Authorities issued warnings to residents in the counties of Tulcea, Galati, and Braila via the Ro-Alert system.
During subsequent search operations near the village of Basesti, another drone with a wingspan of approximately three meters was discovered. This second drone was preliminarily found to be free of explosives. The prosecutor's office is currently investigating the circumstances of the incident.
Romania's Ministry of Foreign Affairs characterized the event as an escalation by Russia and a violation of international law. Bucharest called on NATO and European partners to accelerate the delivery of counter-drone systems.
NATO spokesperson Martin stated: 'We condemn Russia's recklessness, and NATO will continue to strengthen our defenses against all threats, including drones.'
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also expressed solidarity with Romania, asserting that 'Russia's aggressive war has crossed yet another line.' In response to this incident, the European Union is preparing its 21st package of sanctions.
This event underscores the growing threat Russia poses to neighboring countries and has sparked concern within the international community. The reactions from Romania and its NATO partners highlight the seriousness of the situation and their readiness for collective defense. Enhanced security measures and coordinated action between nations will be crucial in countering such threats in the future.
