Karen Khachanov's Remarks on Venus Williams

According to Главком: Russian tennis player Karen Khachanov has publicly questioned the purpose of Venus Williams continuing her professional career, despite her legendary status. His comments, reported by the Ukrainian outlet Glavcom, reflect a broader debate within the tennis world about when top athletes should step away from the sport.

Khachanov expressed confusion over why Williams, given her immense achievements, still competes. While acknowledging her love for the game, he doubted how much satisfaction she could derive from playing when she consistently loses matches. He compared her situation to other aging athletes, asking what drives them to keep going.

Venus Williams' Career Achievements

Venus Williams made her debut on the women's tour in October 1994 and reached her first WTA final in the fall of 1997. Over her career, she has won 48 singles titles, including seven major championships:

  • five at Wimbledon
  • two at the US Open

She also claimed the Grand Slam Cup and the WTA Tour Finals, and in 2000, she won a gold medal at the Sydney Olympics.

In recent years, Williams' results have declined. She last reached a final in 2017, suffering three losses. Now 46 years old, she ranks 471st in the WTA standings and has not won a singles match since July 2025. In doubles, she has 22 titles, 14 of which are majors, along with three Olympic gold medals in doubles and two Grand Slam mixed doubles victories.

"I don't understand why, for example, Venus keeps playing. She has achieved so much, so she must really love tennis. But when she loses match after match-I don't know how much enjoyment you can get when you're not focused on results. Why does she play? Just because she likes showing up at tournaments and getting wildcards? With all due respect to any athlete, I don't see the point. How long can this go on? Ten years?"

Karen Khachanov

Khachanov's comments have sparked discussion among tennis fans and analysts, who are debating Williams' future in professional sports. The remarks highlight a larger conversation about the role of veteran athletes and their desire to remain at the top level, even when their performance no longer meets expectations. Venus Williams, undoubtedly one of the greatest figures in tennis history, continues to draw mixed reactions to her decision to keep competing.

Khachanov's remarks raise questions about the longevity of professional athletes in tennis. Similar discussions have emerged with the return of Serena Williams, who has recently stepped back onto the court after nearly four years away. Her comeback adds another layer to the ongoing debate about the motivations driving seasoned players to continue competing.
