According to ХВИЛЯ: Russian forces hit the settlement of Pechenihy in Kharkiv Oblast on Tuesday, August 18, killing ten people. The strike targeted a crowded crossroads near a post office and shops, and many more were wounded, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a Facebook post. Zelensky said the area hit was surrounded by residential buildings. Emergency and operational teams were dispatched to the scene, and firefighters extinguished a blaze. He vowed that Ukraine would retaliate for the attack.
'The Russians launched a brutal strike this morning on a busy intersection in Pechenihy in Kharkiv Oblast - an area where the post office and shops are located, surrounded by residential buildings.' Volodymyr Zelensky
Zelensky again called on Ukraine's international partners to step up pressure on Moscow and strengthen support for Kyiv. 'We will certainly respond to this Russian strike. It is no less important for partners to add their own measures to our rightful kinetic responses through pressure on Russia and support for Ukraine,' he said.
Previously, it was reported that overnight attacks in Kharkiv destroyed four stories of a residential building, and a massive strike on the capital region also caused fatalities.
International reaction
The attack reflects the continuing conflict between Ukraine and Russia and points to an escalation of violence in the area. Zelensky's response shows Ukraine intends not only to defend its territory but also to demand more active international involvement in countering Russian aggression. Given the current circumstances, the international community may face additional security and humanitarian challenges in Ukraine.
