Russia Cancels Its Main Naval Parade Again

According to Главком: According to British intelligence, Russia is likely to cancel its main Navy Day parade in 2025 due to security concerns linked to Ukrainian attacks. Russia traditionally celebrates Navy Day on the last weekend of July. From 2017 to 2024, the highlight of the holiday was a naval parade held in the Baltic Sea near St. Petersburg, where Vladimir Putin reviewed warships during the event.

In 2024, Russia reduced the scale of the parade and then abandoned it entirely, citing security reasons. On June 3, Ukrainian forces struck the Russian Baltic Fleet frigate 'Boykiy' (a Steregushchiy-class vessel) in Kronstadt. Following these Ukrainian strikes, Russia tightened security measures at its naval bases.

Ongoing Threat of New Attacks

British intelligence identifies the threat of further attacks as the primary reason behind the Kremlin's decision to cancel the parade. This year, Russia's main naval parade will almost certainly be called off again for security reasons. As a possible alternative, the Kremlin is considering large-scale naval exercises, with one potential example being drills codenamed 'July Storm.'

The cancellation of Russia's naval parade highlights the growing security challenges the country faces amid its ongoing conflict with Ukraine. This decision suggests that Russia views threats from Ukrainian forces as serious enough to impact its military traditions and public displays of strength. Naval exercises may become a key part of the Kremlin's plans to demonstrate military power without the risks associated with public events.
