The situation with Leonid Volkov

According to Главком: Russian politician Leonid Volkov has become a subject of a criminal case in Ukraine over offensive statements regarding Ukrainian military personnel and justifications of the aggression of the Russian Federation. The criminal proceedings were initiated based on a deputy's inquiry from Olga Vasilevskaya-Smagulya. Volkov faces up to eight years of imprisonment for violating Ukrainian legislation.

Volkov's provocative statements

Leonid Volkov, who currently resides in Europe, has become known for his provocative statements, including calling the former head of the Main Intelligence Directorate Kirill Budanov 'a vile village political technologist.' Moreover, Volkov stated that Ukrainian figures Andriy Yermak, Mykhailo Podolyak, and Kirill Budanov 'should be in prison.' His statements also include justifications of Russia's actions, which he began making back in 2014.

In Ukraine, Volkov has been charged under parts 3 of Article 436-2 of the Criminal Code, which pertains to the justification of Russia's aggression, as well as under Article 435-1, which establishes liability for defamation of military honor and dignity. In light of this situation, Lithuania is considering the possibility of revoking Volkov's residence permit. It is known that he previously used terms of Nazis and denazification in his statements, declaring that 'denazification has indeed occurred' and that 'a Nazi who was a gift for Kremlin propaganda has died.'

“denazification has indeed occurred” - Leonid Volkov

Thus, the situation around Leonid Volkov continues to attract significant attention both in Ukraine and beyond, particularly in the context of his accusations and potential consequences for his status in Lithuania. The opening of a criminal case against Volkov also underscores the importance of accountability for public statements in the context of military conflict and the existence of legal mechanisms to protect the honor and dignity of military personnel. This case could set a precedent for similar cases in the future, especially in light of the intensification of anti-propaganda measures in Ukraine and other countries.
