Romania’s move to the euro

According to Radiotrek — Світ: Romania is exploring the switch from the leu to the euro around 2032. Before that can happen, the country must meet the EU’s convergence criteria and get its public finances on a firmer footing. Adopting the euro is a major policy step for any EU country, in part because it requires broad economic alignment. The government’s plan for the end of this decade includes:

  • reducing the budget deficit;
  • reinforcing the financial system;
  • adopting a national development plan.

Once 2030 is over, an evaluation phase is expected to assess whether Romania is ready to enter the eurozone.

Ukraine’s situation

By contrast, Ukraine joining the EU would not automatically mean it gives up the hryvnia. The country still has to hit the required economic benchmarks and receive approval from European bodies. According to the National Bank of Ukraine, the process of adopting the euro would be a long one, with no completion before 2030 at the earliest. This emerged from a statement made by Minister Dragos Pislaru on August 19, 2026.

Romania, which is among the nations seeking closer eurozone integration, shows a strategic approach to economic stability, and that could support its broader development. Ukraine, meanwhile, must concentrate on meeting economic targets if it wants to pursue its euro ambitions, underlining how difficult and drawn-out this journey can be.
