Safran Power Units to Supply Turbojet Engines for Falcon Supersonic Drone Capable of Mach 1.6
Partnership Announced Between Safran Power Units and UVAD Technologies Inc.
According to НВ — Техно: Texas-based Safran Power Units has secured a contract to provide turbojet engines for Falcon, a new supersonic unmanned aerial vehicle developed by UVAD Technologies Inc. Powered by two Safran engines, Falcon can reach speeds up to Mach 1.6 at low to medium altitudes. This drone is designed for high maneuverability, carries payloads up to 50 kg, and features autonomous flight capabilities, making it versatile for a wide range of missions.
The Falcon’s modular container design allows for easy transport and rapid deployment. Additionally, it employs a pneumatic catapult launch system, eliminating the need for a runway. Intended applications include:
- countering hypersonic threats;
- conducting reconnaissance operations;
- intercepting and engaging fighter aircraft.
“We are excited to begin this collaboration with Safran Power Units, a globally recognized leader in high-performance yet affordable turbojet engines. Both companies share a vision of delivering advanced, cost-effective defense solutions capable of addressing emerging challenges, particularly those posed by supersonic threats.”
David Birkett, representative of UVAD Technologies Inc.
Gislen Duhan from Safran Power Units emphasized the significance of this alliance: “Partnering with UVAD to supply the propulsion system for the Falcon drone marks an important milestone. Our engines will significantly enhance Falcon’s supersonic flight performance, reliability, and cost-efficiency.”
In parallel, the U.S. Air Force has awarded Lockheed Martin a $694 million contract for the production of the AGM-183A hypersonic missile. Designed to be launched from bombers, this weapon combines a rocket booster with a hypersonic glide vehicle. The AGM-183A program has now transitioned from prototype and flight testing phases into full-scale production.
Implications for Defense Technology Advancements
The development of the Falcon drone alongside the AGM-183A missile underscores a growing emphasis on cutting-edge defense technologies that could reshape modern military strategies. These initiatives respond directly to evolving security challenges, particularly those involving supersonic and hypersonic capabilities, which are increasingly critical factors in contemporary conflicts worldwide.
As the defense landscape evolves, the advancements in hypersonic technologies are becoming increasingly critical. In this context, the recent announcement of the full-scale production of the AGM-183A hypersonic missile by the U.S. Air Force highlights the urgency for innovative solutions like the Falcon drone, which aims to address similar threats with its supersonic capabilities.
