Who qualifies for support

The regional authorities in Sardinia have renewed a grant scheme designed to help people purchase or renovate a first residence in smaller communities. Successful applicants can receive up to €15,000, covering no more than half of the total costs, which gives the initiative wide appeal. Both Italian citizens and foreigners may take part, provided they are ready to relocate, register their residency, and stay on the island for at least five years.

Not a relocation payment

This is not simply a cash bonus for changing addresses. The money must be used specifically to purchase, renovate or restore a first home. Applicants also need to officially register where they live and use the property as the main residence for their household. In addition, grantees are required to remain in the new home for no less than five years after receiving the funds.

What else is required

The programme has been extended through 2026, with €15 million set aside each year from 2026 to 2028. Some applicants receive extra priority:

• people moving from abroad or from other parts of Italy,
• young families,
• households with children,
• applicants under 40.

Grants are available in municipalities with up to 5,000 residents, whereas in the past only even smaller towns took part.
