Ukrainian Security Service Strikes Russian Shadow Fleet Tanker and Three Oil Depots
SBU Operations Target Russian Naval and Fuel Infrastructure
According to ХВИЛЯ: Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) has carried out attacks on the Avero, a tanker belonging to Russia’s shadow fleet, and three oil depots in the Stavropol region. These actions are part of special operations aimed at fulfilling President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s directive to reduce Russia’s military and economic capabilities.
An SBU maritime drone named Mamai struck the Avero, a vessel used to transport Russian crude oil despite the G7 and EU oil embargo. The Avero, which is under Ukrainian sanctions, had been shipping oil to China and India. This marks the fourth Russian shadow tanker hit by the SBU in the last ten days, with all targeted vessels being of the Suezmax class.
Regional Security Impact of the Strikes
The attack on oil depots in Stavropol Krai, located roughly 600 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, triggered massive fires, with explosions and blazes reported at fuel and lubricant storage tanks. These moves highlight Ukraine’s intensified efforts to counter Russia’s economic interests, which pose a threat to regional stability.
The SBU’s actions are part of a broader Ukrainian strategy to cut the financial resources Russia uses to fund its war efforts and to undermine its energy security. Successful strikes against the shadow fleet could significantly disrupt Russian oil exports to global markets, thereby affecting the aggressor country’s economic standing. They also demonstrate Ukraine’s growing ability to launch long-range attacks on critical enemy targets, potentially shifting the regional balance of power.
The recent strikes by the SBU not only highlight Ukraine's commitment to disrupting Russian energy supplies but also resonate with earlier operations, such as the recent attack on a Russian tanker near Yalta. These coordinated efforts reflect a strategic approach to undermine Russia's naval capabilities and further emphasize the growing effectiveness of Ukraine's maritime drone operations in the ongoing conflict.
