SBU Conducts Long-Range Operation on Russian Soil

According to Главком: Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), working alongside the country’s defense forces, carried out a coordinated long-range operation targeting strategic sites inside Russia and in occupied Crimea. Ukrainian drones and missile systems hit a military-industrial complex facility and three oil logistics hubs in the Moscow region, along with an air defense system and runway infrastructure at the Belbek airbase in Crimea.

Among the sites hit:

  • The Angstrom plant, a key Russian military supplier producing semiconductors and microchips for military hardware.
  • The Moscow Oil Refinery, which fuels the capital region.
  • The Solnechnogorsk and Volodarskoye oil pumping stations.
  • Belbek airbase, where a Pantsir-S2 missile-gun system, an S-400 radar hangar, an Orion drone control complex, and a Forpost drone ground station were destroyed.

SBU chief Yevgeniy Khmara reported that the operation achieved 100% accuracy in the Moscow area. He stressed:

'These combined strikes are systematic and directly impact combat operations, depriving the occupation army of fuel, high-tech components, and air cover.' - Yevgeniy Khmara

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented:

'Our responses to Russia’s prolonging of the war and its strikes on our cities and communities are entirely justified. This time, Ukraine’s long-range sanctions reached the Moscow region.' - Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Ukrainian long-range weapons covered over 500 kilometers, showcasing the ability to execute precision operations at great distances. The news was published on May 17, 2026, by Glavcom, citing the SBU. This operation highlights Ukraine’s expanding capability to strike deep into Russian territory, a key factor in shifting the war’s dynamics.

Impact on Russia’s Military Capabilities

This operation demonstrates Ukraine’s growing prowess in long-range warfare. By hitting strategic assets, it likely reduces Russian forces’ combat readiness and ability to launch offensives. Such actions may form part of Ukraine’s broader strategy to systematically weaken Russia’s military potential in the protracted conflict.

The recent operation underscores Ukraine's growing capability to conduct precise strikes deep within enemy territory. This follows previous successful missions, such as the recent attack on the Black Sea Fleet base in Crimea, where significant military assets were targeted.
